Austin Hinchey
Volleyball Player – Position: Setter
(Born October 15, 1991 in Edmonton, Alberta Canada)
Austin Hinchey is the current captain of the Canadian Paralympic Volleyball team. He is also in his
third year and team captain of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Men’s Varsity Volleyball
team who competes in both the Alberta College Athletic Conference and the Canadian College Athletic
Conference.
Austin is a unique athlete who has had to overcome some incredible hurdles to compete at the level
he is at today. Austin was diagnosed with Congenital Pseudarthosis at 18 months old. This brittle bone
disease affected his left tibia and fibula below the knee. Very interested in sports from a young age
Austin spent his time playing recreational hockey and soccer as well as downhill skiing when he was
not in casts or recovering from surgery. At ten years old after countless broken bones and 6 operations
Austin made the decision (Feb, 4, 2002) to have his leg amputated below the knee. This decision was
made with the hope that Austin may be able to continue to participate in some recreational sports.
After getting into his first prosthetic limb Austin suffered another set back by breaking his left femur
playing soccer. He managed a full recovery and from there his passion and ability for athletics took off.
Austin began playing basketball and volleyball shortly after his amputation and at age 15 Austin was
named co-captain to the Alberta Provincial U16 Volleyball team. Austin also played with both high
school and club teams. With the Northern Alberta Volleyball Club program he earned three provincial
titles and one provincial All-Star award over four seasons and was also named to the All-City Volleyball
team in his grade 12 year.
Austin has competed with the Canadian Paralympic Volleyball program since 2007. He was captain of
the team in Guadalajara, Mexico in November 2011 for the Pam Am Championships. This event will be
used as a qualifying opportunity for the London 2012 Paralympics. Austin credits RE7 in helping him
with his recovery both during and after his volleyball games with replenishment of key nutrients that he
needs to keep on the top of his game.
Austin’s drive to excel at competitive level sports has made him an inspiration and role model for all of
those that have had the opportunity to see him compete.
